Record-breaking model aircraft flying challenge, Peakirk - June 2021
A group of model aircraft enthusiasts staged a charity event on Peakirk village green between June 21st and 22nd, 2021. A team of 12 members of the Peterborough Model Flying Club aimed to set a record for flying electric line controlled model aircraft, the target being to achieve 24 hours of total flying time in a period of no longer than 30 hours.
A "squadron" of seven specially-built aircraft equipped with brushless electric motors were deployed in the marathon. The planes had a 24-inch (60.96-centimetre) wingspan and were attached to 30-feet (9.144-metre) lines. The "pilots" operated in relay from two flying circles marked out on the village green and a total of 36 rechargeable batteries were employed to power the aircraft.
The team actually achieved a combined flying time of 27 hours, 50 minutes and 45 seconds. At the time of writing, the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) had indicated that it was preparing to recognize this feat as a British national record. As this was an all-day event, it was deliberately staged on the longest day of the year as this afforded the fewest hours of darkness for overnight flying.
The record attempt - which attracted enthusiastic support from residents of Peakirk and neighbouring villages - was intended to raise funds to help pay for replacing the roof of St. Pega's church in Peakirk, the lead from the roof having been stolen in November 2018. As of July 2021, the event had succeeded in raising over £5,000 towards this goal.
