Malling Abbey has been the home of a community of Anglican Benedictine nuns since 1916. About 1090, Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, chose Malling as the site of his foundation for a community of Benedictine nuns, one of the first post-Conquest monasteries for women. The Abbey was surrendered to the Crown on 28th October 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The buildings fell into ruin by the mid-18th century and were restored at the end of the 19th century.
