A Centurion had his quarters at the head of each block, with his men housed in shared barracks, with bunkbeds etc over the remainder of the block.

The units were obviously close-knit, disciplined, tough, committed and professional - qualities that set the very best true soldiers apart.

We can obviously only make an educated guess at what their living conditions were like, but their lives must have been tough, brief and unpredictable.
