TF0227 : End of footpath

taken 5 years ago, near to Irnham, Lincolnshire, England

End of footpath
End of footpath
As noted elsewhere, the footpath north-west from Irnham appears to lead nowhere TF0227 : Footpath to nowhere. It seems to end at the post in the corner of this field, but the OS map shows it continuing for a short distance into the wood. As with several other paths in this area, the 'dead end' occurs at a parish boundary.
Dead end public rights of way

"However, the Definitive Maps [of Public Rights of Way] are full of anomalies where ‘dead end’ public rights of way stop for no apparent reason. This frequently occurs at parish boundaries, where adjacent parish councils took a different approach to what they considered to be a public right of way when the Definitive Maps were being first drafted [in the 1950s]." (Ref.: Technical Standard ‐ Public rights of way. Document no.: HS2‐HS2‐HW‐STD‐000‐000002).
The Ramblers Association is leading efforts to ensure that missing historic rights of way are added to the Definitive Map before the cut-off date of 2026 LinkExternal link
