A House called The Lions in Berwick-upon-Tweed
A House called The Lions in Berwick-upon-Tweed
This house stands by the Elizabethan Walls and dates from 1807. The artist L S Lowry (1887-1976) had considered buying this house in 1947 and was intrigued by the pot lions at the gate. He changed his mind though when an architect friend told him it was rampant with damp.
This large house became derelict and was threatened with demolition in 1976. It was bought for the Berwick-upon-Tweed Preservation Trust by Col J I M Smail and restored through the generosity of a consortium of local businessmen.
