TA0760 : St Martins Church, Lowthorpe

taken 17 years ago, near to Lowthorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire, England

St Martins Church, Lowthorpe
St Martins Church, Lowthorpe
The church was probably built in 1333 when St Martin's was made collegiate by Sir John de Heslerton and housed a rector, six chantry priests and three clerks. The college survived until dissolution in 1579 when St Martin's became the Parish Church. Older (partly ruined) bits of the buildings are described on local signposting as a monastery.
