SK9833 : Footpath on the north edge of Kirton Wood

taken 5 years ago, near to Old Somerby, Lincolnshire, England

Footpath on the north edge of Kirton Wood
Footpath on the north edge of Kirton Wood
Crossing the watershed between the East Glen and West Glen rivers. This part of the path, marked as a Public Right of Way on OS maps, ends abruptly at the end of the wood at a parish boundary (a common occurrence). On the other side of the parish boundary it continues, on the 1:25,000 OS map, as a marked footpath.
Dead end public rights of way

"However, the Definitive Maps [of Public Rights of Way] are full of anomalies where ‘dead end’ public rights of way stop for no apparent reason. This frequently occurs at parish boundaries, where adjacent parish councils took a different approach to what they considered to be a public right of way when the Definitive Maps were being first drafted [in the 1950s]." (Ref.: Technical Standard ‐ Public rights of way. Document no.: HS2‐HS2‐HW‐STD‐000‐000002).
The Ramblers Association is leading efforts to ensure that missing historic rights of way are added to the Definitive Map before the cut-off date of 2026 LinkExternal link
