When the castle was remodelled by Charles Barry between 1835 and 1850, the 14th-century tower, and the 17th-century and 18th-century extensions, were retained and some of the original building is visible in the interior courtyard.
Dunrobin Castle and Gardens

Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast of the Northern Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch. It is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms.

The oldest part of the castle dates from the fourteenth century, but most of the present building and the gardens were added by Sir Charles Barry LinkExternal link who remodelled the castle in the Scottish Baronial style between 1835 and 1850. The 14th-century tower, and the 17th-century and 18th-century extensions, were retained and some of the original building is visible in the interior courtyard

The Castle, which resembles a French château with its towering conical spires, is a Category A listed building (Historic Environment Scotland LB7044 LinkExternal link )

The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972. The castle and its gardens are still privately owned; they are open to the public between April and October each year LinkExternal link .
