HS2 enabling works, Welsh Road area, September 2021 (29)
This is the site off Welsh Road from which twin tunnels will be bored under Long Itchington Wood Link
It was reported in the Leamington Courier that a tunnelling machine was being imported from Germany in its component parts. It would be reassembled in an enormous pit so that it would be at the right level to commence tunnelling. I've been puzzled by the white framework, right, since I saw it from a distance in April and again on this walk: SP3863 : HS2 enabling works, Welsh Road area, September 2021 (14). Recalling the above and observing the branding 'Teichmann 45t' on the side I've concluded that it's an elevated helipad at which components can be delivered by helicopter, helped into a cradle and lowered under greater control by travelling crane to a waiting vehicle which will take it to the pit for assembly. The HS2 website has a section on tunnels Link
and a video tour by the enthusiastic Adrien Link
Knowing from this that the tunnelling spoil is turned into a slurry I wonder if the circular structures here are tanks for storing it before transport or processing. The tunnelling machine instals the precast tunnel lining segments as it proceeds and I further wonder whether all the tunnel linings will be made off-site but stored here or made here, in which case some of these structures could be silos for materials. It's conceivable that the national shortage of HGV drivers is delaying the delivery of materials and the removal of spoil. See this thread: Link
The guys in the orange onesies were most helpful. Asked if the local bus stopped here they referred me to the Stagecoach website. Asked what went on at the site, one said it was top secret; another referred me to the HS2 website. I pointed out that the plans could be found at Link
