Friar’s Crag NY2622 : Friars Crag

A viewpoint next to the lake, S of Keswick. By the side of the path to it are memorials to John Ruskin and to Hardwicke Rawnsley. The inscription on Ruskin's stone reads: “The first thing which I remember as an event in life was being taken by my nurse to the brow of Friar's Crag on Derwentwater” and the dates in Roman numerals: 1819 – 1900.

Derwent Isle NY2622 : Derwent Isle

Derwent Isle was allocated to the German miners in the 16C. It was later bought by Joseph Pocklington from Nottinghamshire, who built follies in the 1770s such as a church, fort, battery from which he fired cannon, and a Gothic ‘druid’s temple’. Derwent Island House is a house built in the 1840s in the Palladian style. It is owned by th NT and has been restored by the tenants. It is open to the public on five days of the year, and the admission fee includes the cost of the ferry from Keswick Lakeside. Early advanced booking is necessary to secure a ticket.
