Tower of Light
Rising above the Metrolink arch near Manchester Central, this futuristic 40-metre high structure has rapidly become one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Tower of Light is a flue tower and shell lace structural façade designed by award-winning architectural practice Tonkin Liu. It encloses a highly efficient source of heat and power for a number of prominent buildings including Central Library, the Bridgewater Hall, Heron House and the Manchester Art Gallery, by sending electricity and heat - via hot water - through two kilometres of underground pipes.
