Gatehouse of Warkworth Castle
Gatehouse of Warkworth Castle
Built in the 13th Century, this is the setting for the opening scene of Shakespeare's "Henry IV Part 2". Act 1 scene 1 starts with Lord Bardolph saying "Who keeps the gate here? ho!". The porter opens the gate, the Earl of Northumberland appears, and is told conflicting news of the Battle of Shrewsbury. Eventually Northumberland's servants arrive from Shrewsbury and tell him that his son Henry Hotspur is dead.
