This is a square of the Isle of Walney, which has been part of Barrow in Furness since the late 19C. In 1873 it was “nominally a subdivision of Hawcoat”, a division of Dalton Township in Dalton parish. It lies on Triassic mudstone.
This was a seaside resort back in 1891, developed after 1873. There was a group of buildings at Tummer Hill, at the end of what is now the A590 road, and a road southwards alongside a recreation ground above the shore, just as it is now except that there was a pavilion and bandstand at csq 83 (short for SD178673). Castle House at csq 94 is probably still there. The area between this road and the marsh was a series of fields, as it still is in
SD1866. North of the A590 the golf course was Tummer Hill Rabbit Warren. The Roundhouse
