NZ0847 : Low Alders farm

taken 3 years ago, near to Rowley, County Durham, England

Low Alders farm
Low Alders farm
This old farmstead stands beside Healeyfield Lane. It dates from the second half of the 19th century, from map evidence. The land to the south was part of Lanchester Common, enclosed in the late 18th century. It was quite common for new farms to be established on the enclosures after a decent interval, and this may have happened here. The name would seem to have come from the earlier farm of High Alderheads, which is a short distance south, on the A68.
