Erected to the memory of
James Maitland Balfour Esq
of Whittingehame
Major Commandant of the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry
by the Officers, non commissioned Officers and Privates of that Corps
In testimony of their great respect and esteem for him as a Commanding Officer
Of their affectionate regard for him as an amiable and able country gentleman
and of their deep and lasting regret for his premature removal from among them.

This monument, built of red sandstone, stands by the roadside overlooking Traprain Law. On a clear day there are wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, including Lammerlaw, the Moorfoots, the Pentlands and Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh, the Garletons, the Paps o Fife across the Firth of Forth, North Berwick Law, Traprain Law and the farmlands around Dunbar.
