Sculptures - animate and inanimate
At first sight, this image appears to show a large sculpture (Three Piece Reclining Figure No.1 by Henry Moore) surrounded by sheep.
It may come as a surprise to learn that the sheep themselves are also a sculpture - albeit a mobile and animate one - by Kate Daudy and Kostya Novoselov, under the rather wordy title "Alternative Random Number Generator: the Sheep of Mr Charles Platts (2021)". The sheep have been sprayed with numbers to demonstrate random number theory as they wander around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
We are assured that the numbers were applied with an organic and non-toxic spray under the supervision of the owner-farmer and that no animal has been or will be harmed in any way but there is no suggestion that the sheep were consulted about whether they wished to be included in the exhibition. Remarkably nearly all the sheep in the Park and in this project were concentrated up at the top of the Park by the main entrance when this image was taken.
