Two Probable Former Shafts
Two Probable Former Shafts
These two depressions are far easier to see on the ground than in the picture. They are a short distance apart and equal in size, measuring about seven feet in diameter. There don't appear to have been any mine workings in the immediate vicinity, and neither are marked on any maps, past or present.
I'm pretty certain that mining can be ruled out because, as well as there being no mention of mines at this spot on the meticulous ScottishShale website, it would probably be viewed as a bit dangerous to site shafts so close to a fairly big watercourse (Breich Water) due to flooding implications. 1950s and 1960s OS maps do show, however, that the sewage works situated on the North side of the burn close to here used to be far larger, and straddled the water. So my best guess is that the two depressions might have been former access points to underground pipework, though I can't imagine why there would be two required so close to one another.
Yet another unsolved mystery of the countryside...
