Floating Earth - Lightwaves 2021
The large globe in front of the MediaCityUK buildings is a digital art installation by UK artist Luke Jerram created from 1200dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. Named “Floating Earth” and measuring 10 metres in diameter, it has been installed in North Bay (formerly part of Manchester’s No 10 Dock) for the 2021 Lightwaves Festival.

Lightwaves claims to be the UK’s largest free outdoor digital art light show. The annual festival, hosted by Quays Culture, showcases an eclectic programme of digital light art, taking over public spaces in Salford Quays and MediaCityUK each December. Each year, Lightwaves features new and exclusively commissioned digital art displays alongside tableaux borrowed from the Blackpool Illuminations.
