Statue in The Broadway
So said Richmal' Crompton's Just William. For most people that would be a most un-British like statement but there is no doubt there are many, many statues in our country. The 18th-century sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet said they were ‘to perpetuate the memory of illustrious men and to give us models of virtue’. But many I come across are of ordinary people such as farm workers or nurses. And then there are the notable people my education so far has not covered- and I've been at school continuously since 1966!
