Footpath heading for Flakebridge Wood
The footpath, starting from Well House Road, follows a wide flat-bottomed valley of remarkably low gradient, falling only ten metres over its first three kilometres during which it has joined Murton Beck to become Frith Beck. The heavy clay soil makes for very slippery going after recent snowmelt, so perhaps the low gradient is something to be grateful for. To the left, Stank Wood occupies a narrow slope facing east whilst to the right there are just a few scattered trees on the west-facing bank, allowing them to grow to their full potential, as with this rather fine example.
