Helensburgh's war memorial is situated in the walled garden of Hermitage Park. The memorial with reflecting pond was designed by local architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson. The ironwork gates were made by Robert Smith and Co. When closed, the gates show 1914 - 1918; and 1939 - 1945, but only the left half is visible in this view. The memorial (including the gates) is Category A listed Link.
Erected in 1872, the inscription on the plinth of the obelisk reads: To the memory of Henry Bell The first in Great Britain who was successful in practically applying steam power for the purposes of navigation. Born in the County of Linlithgow in 1766 Died in Helensburgh in 1830
