Wistman's Wood :: SX6177

A small area of ancient woodland of predominantly Pedunculate Oak (Quercus rubor) situated above the West Dart River north of Two Bridges at an altitude of around 400m. It is noted for the relatively stunted growth of the trees, typically less than 5m in height, and for the ferns, lichens and mosses that cover many of the branches. The underlying boulders are also heavily covered with moss. The site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a National Nature Reserve.
