The mark was previously levelled at 510.772 feet above Liverpool Datum during the 1841/4 1GL Liverpool to Port Carlisle Survey. The surveyor's description was 'No. 406. Mark on top of the 3d milestone from Penrith ; 2.56 ft. above surface'
