Could the stones be the remains of a parapet of Balmer's Bridge on which a benchmark was levelled at 439.485 feet above Liverpool Datum during the Ordnance Survey 1GL Liverpool to Port Carlisle Survey of 1841-1844? The surveyor's description was 'No. 408. Bolt in West face of Balmer's Bridge ; 2.54 ft. below top of battlement'
