Path across The Orry
Path across The Orry
The Orry is the local name for the green, comprising of grassland and woodland, which separates Eaglesham's two main streets, Montgomery Street and Polnoon Street (in the distance). To the left of the path in an area now dominated by woodland, is the site of the Orry Cotton Mill. Built in the 1790s, it was five storeys high with two water wheels. At its peak in the mid-19th century it employed 200 people. Following a major fire in 1876 it was abandoned and the stones removed and used elsewhere locally.
