Lochwinnoch Loop Line cycle path :: NS3254

The 14 miles long Lochwinnoch Loop Line cycle path is part of the National Cycle Network. It runs from Paisley Canal railway station to Glengarnock along disused railway lines of the Glasgow & South Western Railway company.

The first stretch of the route is along the former Princes Pier line as far as Johnstone, where it branches off to join the main stretch, which runs along the former Lochwinnoch Loop Line (which is also known as the Kilbarchan Loop Line).

The path ends between Kilbirnie and Glengarnock, near the site of the former steelworks.

The line was so named as it formed a relief loop for railway traffic through Lochwinnoch to Ayrshire, away from the parallel main line which is still in use and which runs on the other side of Castle Semple Loch.

The loop line closed under the Beeching axe in the mid 1960s. It was converted to a cycle path around twenty years later.
