Pat Daw's sculpture is made of a very dense wood, about 50% heavier than oak, that had formed part of the 14" square pilings submerged when the pier was built in 1869. The wood is Greenheart, 'Ocotea Rodiaei' that will not float in water even when dry and was brought up during the 1998 reconstruction of the pier. It was made with hand held power tools and hand chisels. It still had residual sea water in it during the early stages of carving.
