With the water level pretty low, the stepping stones are dry and those with longer legs have no trouble hopping across before the dog even notices, giving time to get a camera out. Not quite quickly enough, as it turned out, as I missed the poor thing falling in. She has now decided that the next gap (a little wider) is not a pleasant prospect (she'd be happy to wade across if it was shallow or swim if it was not flowing so fast, but she's not keen on anything "technical" like leaping from rock to rock over a frightening torrent). The solution which proved necessary was to put the expensive camera gear safely away from the river before returning to straddle each scary gap and hoick reluctant canine across (by this time she'd got the rocks wet, so a wriggle at the wrong moment would have entailed a real risk of us both falling in).
