St Joseph's Way
St Joseph's Way
The road takes its name from the nearby Catholic church. The spine road of the estate shown here follows the route of the former Pudsey railway line (see shared description). See also SE2233 : St Joseph's Way, Pudsey.
LNER Pudsey and Low Moor Branch

This railway was originally a branch that left the Bradford (Exchange) to Leeds line and ran as far as Pudsey Greenside; it opened in 1878. In 1893 a 540m tunnel and a viaduct over the Tyersal Beck valley were built that enabled the line to be extended to Laisterdyke where it rejoined the main line; at the same time a curve at the eastern end towards Bramley enabled through working between Leeds and Bradford over the loop.

The stations at Pudsey Lowtown and Pudsey Greenside both closed in 1964. Parts of the line are still walkable, but a lot has been built on.
