"Nigerian" EIIR postbox, Elswick Road (B1600) / Rye Hill
In the 1970s, the postbox manufacturer Carron was casting a batch of pillar boxes for Nigeria; some of these were made available to the Royal Mail as at the time they had a shortfall in their stock of postboxes.
There are two main features that distinguish this type from the "standard" EIIR postbox: (1) rather than the body of the box and the cap being cast separately, they were cast in one piece, and there are no "flutes" on the cap; and (2) the words "NEXT COLLECTION" are on a raised flat projection, rather than being cast on the curved surface - see NZ2364 : "Nigerian" EIIR postbox, Elswick Road (B1600) / Rye Hill (detail), and TL8925 : Great Tey Post Office Postbox (photographed by Geographer).
The location of this postbox is shown in NZ2364 : Elswick Road (B1600) east of Rye Hill and NZ2364 : Elswick Road (B1600) / Rye Hill.
