Pevsner in 1961 noted "two orders of colonnettes much restored". Munro Cautley in 1937 commented that it is "so close to the west end of the church that it is unlikely to have been its original position". Arthur Mee in 1941 claimed to have entered the church through this "beautiful doorway set here when Orford's keep was new" but that seems unlikely. The repositioning and restoration were probably part of the major works completed in 1879 by Frederick Barnes at the expense of Sir Richard Wallace.
