TM4251 : South transept at All Saints' Church
taken 3 months ago, near to Sudbourne, Suffolk, Great Britain

South transept at All Saints' Church
All Saints' has Norman origins (being the mother church of Orford) but the ridiculously short transepts date only from the extensive restoration completed in 1879 under Frederick Barnes, who completely rebuilt the chancel and made its roof continuous with the nave.
This south transept houses a family pew for the Wallaces, descendants of the Marquesses of Hertford who resided at Sudbourne Hall (demolished in 1951). Sir Richard Wallace financed the church restoration and later bequeathed his art gallery to the nation, the fabulous Wallace Collection.
The similarly meagre transept on the north side accommodates the organ which Sir Richard also donated.
