A plaque in the church says that judging by the scratch marks, the stone was probably dragged out of a nearby field during ploughing. It was discovered under one of the beech trees that line the road from the church to Oakwood and Anick. The "cup and ring" designs are typical of those found throughout Northumberland from the Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, around 2,000 BC.
