SH7971 : Mill Pond in Bodnant Garden
The pool in question is known as Mill Pond. Originally the pond was used to supply water via a leat to the Mill buildings (now redundant) further down the Dell. Standing on the bridge from where this photograph was taken visitors can see the submerged grid on the Southside which is a chamber leading underneath to a valve control area on the Northside. Created in Victorian times it still works today. Indeed the leat, whilst it had the odd leak, was used as part of the drainage system to reduce the 'silt mountain'.The source of the water is the River Hiraethlyn and flows through the Garden and joins the River Conwy. Trout and salmon are present and breeding.
Silt is a major problem and the bank in the pond area was cleared in Autumn and Winter of 2008. Without its removal significant damage can and has been caused within the Dell area.
Many people refer to Bodnant Gardens when in fact there is only one garden - hence references to ''BG '' should be in the singular rather than plural.
