Gas compressors, Hawthorn Coking Works
There are a row of three gas compressors for boosting the gas to storage and distribution. The two farthest away are driven by electric motors in a sealed room behind the facing wall on the right. (All fittings are flame-proof or sealed away. The compressor nearest is direct coupled to a Belliss & Morcom steam engine (widget on the right). This was built in 1958 and was of 428 BHP.
The vertical cylinders on the left are gas/water aftercoolers. The compressors and steam engine were built by Belliss & Morcom in Birmingham.
