Knucklas Castle
Knucklas Castle
Knucklas Castle was founded by Ralph Mortimer in 1240, where he situated the fortification on top of a hill that is now known as Castle Hill. The castle was besieged by the army of Owain ap Madoc (a general of Llewelyn II) in 1262, where it was attacked by siege engines. The castle saw inactive use at this point, except Edmund Mortimer regained control of the site in 1282. It was possibly abandoned in the 14th century since it was last mentioned in contemporary records in 1316. The earthworks on the hill are intact and there is a sculpture of a dragon's tooth on the motte.
