SE7365 : Cattle drinking from the river
taken 2 years ago, near to Kirkham, North Yorkshire, England
The Derwent rises on Fylingdale Moors (North Yorkshire Moors National Park) and flows 72 miles, mainly south to its junction with the River Ouse at Barmby Barrage. En route it passes through a number of glacial overflow channels, namely The Forge Valley ( Link ) and Kirkham Abbey Gorge. It originally would have had its mouth near Scarborough but this was blocked by glacial debris. The river is prone to flooding, to relieve this pressure the Victorians constructed the Sea Cut Link .
Kirkham Augustinian Priory was founded by Walter L'Espec 1122-1130, who also founded Rievaulx Abbey and dissolved in 1539. The ruins include architectural features from the 12th to 15th centuries and marvellous late 13th century gatehouse. The ruins are grade I listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of English Heritage Link
