Footpath follows former railway
The former Weardale and Rookhope Railway climbed steeply via an incline above Rookhope, then descended much more gently on its course to the east, presumably allowing it to be worked by gravity for much of its distance before joining the developing rail network to the coast. It is now used as a public footpath and traffic-free cycle route, joining the Waskerley Way as part of the Coast-to-Coast cycle way.
