NY9444 : Boltslaw Incline It is recorded that this incline for a mineral line dates back back to 1845, built to bring iron ore from Westgate to connect with the Weardale & Derwent Junction Railway. It climbed >500' in just about 1 mile to 1670'asl. The cable winding house at the top ceased functioning in 1927, but the incline continued in use by horse-drawn wagons carrying supplies to lead mines above Rookhope. It finally closed in 1940, and the standard gauge rails were lifted in 1943. Ruined buildings and a national cycle track are what remain today of a major 19th century feat of engineering.
