Cycle route at Dead Friar's Stone
Cycle route at Dead Friar's Stone
From the public road at Dead Friar's Stone, this rather rough track spurs off for a short distance to join the trackbed of the old Weardale and Rookhope Railway, which provides an excellent surface as a traffic-free cycle route down to Rookhope (on the coast-to-coast route). The map shows this spur as a permissive traffic-free cycle route, too, though signage suggests that the landowner would prefer you didn't know that. The trackbed to the east is much narrower and rejoins the public road in 3.6 kilometres just in time to cross it and merge into the Waskerley Way.
