Railway arches and Newcastle Castle seen from near The Black Gate
A wooden castle was built by William the Conqueror's son Robert Curthose on the bank of the Tyne in 1080 in the town of Munucceaster (Monkchester). The town became known as Novum Castellum or New Castle. The original building was replaced by a stone castle in 1087. In 1172 the castle was rebuilt; the keep which can be seen today mostly dates from this time.
