Rear view of Blackfriars
This is one of the few survivors of Newcastle's medieval past. It was a Dominican (the black friars) Friary established in 1236. After Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, much of it was demolished. However the monks cloisters survived, given to the towns craft guilds and used by them into the 19th century. The buildings had fallen into disrepair but were acquired by Newcastle Corporation in 1950 and extensively restored between 1973-81. Now used for a restaurant and craft workshops. The huge modern apartment building of Hadrian's Tower looms over the scene on the right.
