SP5106 : St Michael at the North Gate
taken 17 years ago, near to Oxford, Oxfordshire, England
St Michael at the North Gate
The church's Saxon tower dates from 1050 and is the oldest building in Oxford. It once abutted the old North Gate entrance to the city, above which was the Bocardo Prison. Although this has long gone the door into the cell in which Bishop Cranmer was held the night before his immolation remains within the tower.
This evening image of the tower seems to me to capture something of its ancient essence notwithstanding the coffee stall that now operates at its base.
