Gertrude Jekyll Garden, Lindisfarne

In 1906 the owner of Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, Sir Edward Hudson, asked Gertrude Jekyll to design a garden to entertain his summer visitors; probably not an easy task given the exposed location close to the coast, but the walls and some bushes provided some shelter and 100 years later it is still a riot of colour and well worth a visit. The architect Edward Lutyens, who was working on the redesign of the castle, provided a layout for the paths to help make it look larger. LinkExternal link .
