The Dornoch Firth forms part of the boundary between Ross and Cromarty, to the south, and Sutherland, to the north. The firth is one of 40 areas in Scotland designated as a national scenic area (NSA) LinkExternal link .

Together with Loch Fleet, it is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) for wildlife conservation. Additionally, together with Morrich More, it has the designation of Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The Dornoch Firth SPA hosts significant osprey populations during the breeding season and overwintering populations of bar-tailed godwit, greylag geese, wigeon, curlew, dunlin, oystercatchers and teal. The firth is also an important site for otters and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina).
