Alycidon has departed Winchcombe
On the preserved Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. No. 55 009 Alycidon is a preserved diesel electric locomotive of class 55, also known as a Deltic.
The Deltics were named after their power plant. The Napier Deltic is a triangular (delta shaped) two stroke diesel with 18 cylinders,36 pistons and three crankshafts developing 1650 horsepower and driving a DC dynamo to feed traction motors in a Co-Co configuration. Each locomotive has two engines.
A total of 22 were built and they were rated at a top speed of 100 mph. They have quite an enthusiast following and this was a well attended event to celebrate 40 years of Deltic preservation with two of the class hauling the entire timetable and a double-headed evening special.
