South Africa War Memorial, The Haymarket
The 24-metre-high South African War Memorial in Haymarket was built in 1908, making it the oldest (and tallest) war memorial in Newcastle. It commemorates the 370 soldiers from Northumbrian regiments killed in the 1899 to 1902 conflict in South Africa (The Second Boer War Link – National Army Museum).
The sandstone monument features a tall octagonal tapered column on a square base, with a bronze figure representing Northumbria at the bottom reaching up to a bronze winged victory figure at the top of the column. It is Grade II*-listed (List Entry Number: 1024847 Link Historic England).
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
