St Cuthbert's Journey
St Cuthbert's Journey
This life-sized sculpture by local artist Fenwick Lawson celebrates the foundation of Durham by monks of the Lindisfarne Community in 995AD. The sculpture depicts six monks carrying St Cuthbert's coffin and tells the “important and epic” story of monks carrying the body on its long journey from Lindisfarne before their journey’s end marked the foundation of Durham.

The sculpture was carved by Fenwick Lawson in 1977 from seven elm trees. Cast in bronze, it was installed in Millennium Square in the city centre and unveiled by HRH Princess Anne on 26 September 2008.

A plaque nearby (NZ2742 : The Journey (plaque)), attached to the wall of the library, gives more information about St Cuthbert and the journey.
