The Town Ward of the castle.
High above the River Tees, Barnard Castle was begun circa 1094 to control a river crossing. Much of the present castle was constructed in the 12th and early 13th centuries and had fine domestic buildings, including a round tower of circa 1200. Later the castle belonged to the earls of Warwick, and from 1471 to 1485 to the Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III. After a siege in 1569, when the castle was badly damaged, the castle declined and was abandoned by the early 17th century. Constructed mostly of squared, coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings. Now in the care of English Heritage. Listed, grade I, with details at: Link
