The eastern defences of the town were built between 1541 and 1543, to designs by the architect John Rogers. They comprised two identical blockhouses, the North Blockhouse and the South Blockhouse, and the Castle, all linked by a curtain wall. The Castle and South Blockhouse became part of the Citadel, built between 1681 and 1685. It was demolished in 1865. During September 2017, Humber Field Archaeology undertook the excavation of the South Blockhouse, immediately south of South Bridge Road.
